MYSTERY
I entered a jewellery design competition in Italy. The Pearl company asked us to make a design that used pearls. The subject and task were unclear. We were free to choose. I chose a white pearl.
Before I start designing jewellery or objects, I always have to create a word or a story so that I know what to draw on the blank paper. This is a language that I build for myself without realising it...
PEARL hides itself in a hard shell in the sea. A mysterious creature. It grows and flourishes in its hiding place. We take this magnificent, mysterious, beautiful living creature from its shell. At such times, I can't help thinking that there is no creature as cruel and irresponsible as man…
Are we attracted to ‘mystery’? Is it the fascination of the unknown? What is this excitement that makes us want to run behind and reach this creature that lives secretly in the depths of the seabed? Indeed, what is behind it?
I wanted to honour this hidden creature by placing it on a crown. When I thought that placing it on a crown was not enough, I wanted it to stand on its own. The ring form cannot stand up straight, it needs a base to stand on. I added a pedestal to the ring even though I knew it wouldn't be functional. To honour the mysterious beauty of the PEARL in the depths of the sea... Or to apologise in some way.
Since I never knew what this creature I honoured and crowned in my hand was going through, I named it: MYSTERY
First of all, people are honoured, and then they think about how to apologise.
